This shot of my dear friend and fellow madman Bryan symbolizes what 2016 meant to me and what I hope 2017 will look like: a rollercoaster ride of emotion and random creative sparks, innovating myself with every frame, and inspiring those near me to do the same!
People have complimented this shot for creative direction, and truly, I wish I could show you fancy moodboards and diagrams with stickfigures holding complex light setups, or selfies with a group of talented teammembers, .. But the way this shot was made really sends a big middle finger up the way of traditional shooting styles: Bryan and me got talking once about doing some weird shoot, and I remember he came up with this idea to do something with a "bipolar schizophrenic painter". I loved the idea, however vague it was, and we met in my homestudio one evening with a bag of acrylic paints (bought at the Action, cheap-o-yo!) and a big sheet of plastic (cause acrylics and carpet don't mix well). We put on some extreme core music and went with the vibe. Neither of us had any idea how this was supposed to turn out, and we really didn't care much for the results as it wasn't client work. I think Bob Ross would call it a happy accident. Just messing around and whatever will be, will be. True creative freedom.
Bryan's expression is timeless. The paint is horrible. The lighting angelic. And the story demonic. Never forget to enjoy yourself, act on impulse, be random and explore new creative frontiers! To a great new year, full of the unprecedented!
