Skansen is an open air museum in Stockholm, Sweden, designed by Artur Hazelius in the late 19th century. Farmhouses, churches, schools and other buildings from Northern Sweden were taken apart piece by piece and re-assembled at Skansen to preserve the quickly-disappearing rural Swedish lifestyle. Over one hundred years later, these buildings still stand in perfect condition, unchanged by the course of time.

My great-great-grandparents, Adam and Maria Åström, were farmers from Northern Sweden. As I wandered the houses at Skansen, I got a glimpse of the life they left behind to come to America. It was an incredible experience.
