Location
This is the Men-an-Tol, an ancient monument on the moors above Penzance near Madron village. Legend has it that if you passed a child through the stone circle 3 times at sunset it would cure rickets and other ailments.Time
It was taken around 11.00 am. I picked up the paper and went for a ride on the bike, then remembered it was on my "to do" list so had a go!Lighting
The light in West Cornwall is world famous for its quality and has been a centre for famous artist colonies in Newlyn and St Ives etc for many years.Equipment
My trusty Canon EOS 40D, Sigma 18-200mm zoom lens 3.5-6.3, polarising filter, tripod and remote shutter release. Lens settings were ISO 100, lens set at 32mm, F22 at 1/10 second.Inspiration
I am fascinated by the ancient monuments that are all over West Cornwall and have been meaning to take pictures of the Men-an-Tol for some time. I also intend to return at night to do a star trail shot here and also at sunset for the "Golden Hour".Editing
The picture was cropped to concentrate on the important elements and exclude a couple of Sunday morning dog walkers. Most of my photographs are taken as large JPEGs and I do not have the time or inclination to spend time processing them. Perhaps when I retire I will do a Photoshop course and start shooting in RAW......In my camera bag
My Canon EOS 50 D (recently updated to get a wider ISO range). The lenses I use depend on what I am shooting - for wildlife I use a Sigma 150-500mm zoom and a Sigma 18-200mm zoom for all round use. I also have a Canon 50mm F1.8 prime lens and a Canon 50mm compact F2.5 macro lens. I use a tripod and remote shutter release if I am doing landscape or low light photography. I also carry a Canon 550 EX flashgun in case I need it.Feedback
Get out there and take lots of photographs of different things. I enjoy the variety of Landscape, Wildlife etc and usually carry a camera with me whenever I go out. If you are not happy with the results, go back and try again at different times of day. Keep going until you are happy with the result - it is great if others like your work but you are the final judge of your photos.
