Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my rose garden on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, USA. It was the first snow of the season.

Time

Noticed there was a snowfall during the night. After coffee and breakfast, I went exploring with my sidekick fur ball...and the camera of course. Many of the images I made ended up in the round file. I kept going back to this one of the rose. There is a stark difference between the rose hanging on the fall and the insistence of the snow to persuade it to succumb to the coming winter. But the rose persisted.

Lighting

The day was clearing with a lull in snow falling even though the overcast continued. The mid morning light was perfectly even giving the image a soft feel with no hard edges.

Equipment

This was taken with a simple point-and-shoot digital camera that was handheld with no flash.

Inspiration

I have a few acres that is near an electrical right of way. I wander the property occasionally to record our time here. We have a plethora of wildlife and it's always a serendipity to catch an unsuspecting creature. There were none this snowy morning so I focused on the landscape and it's wonders.

Editing

no post processing other than some minor cropping to remove distractions.

In my camera bag

I shoot now with a Nikon 7200 with the standard kit lens. I did pick up a 70-300 lens for the reach that the 18-140 couldn't catch. I have a remote shutter release, spare batteries, and always close by is my HP convertible laptop that I can edit and save images. Spare batteries, lens tissues and lint/dust brush. I'm new to digital cameras and all that goes along with the hobby. I add and remove items in the camera bag depending on what my focus is in subjects. I seem to always have my midrange tripod handy.

Feedback

Any advice for others? Just keep your eyes open and take advantage of every opportunity. Opportunities have a shelf life. Sunrises or sunsets don't wait...neither does wildlife.
