Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a botanical garden during a pumpkin carving event in Missouri.

Time

The room had lots of windows and was set up to display pumpkin carvings. It was during golden hour and there were twinkle lights plus a fog machine was running among the plants. I decided to have some fun with my camera settings and the unique environment. That fun produced one of my all time favorite images we see here!

Lighting

There is an ominous feeling when I see this photograph. Its the feeling of someone watching you. I knew I wanted the focus to be on the silhouette of the grass instead of the lights because at first my eye is drawn to the lights, which is obvious and natural. I wanted the light bokeh to force the viewer to find the real focal point.

Equipment

I used a Canon T5i with a 24mm lens.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the Halloween festivities, its always been my favorite holiday.

Editing

The RAW image was pretty darn close the final product. I brightened up some parts and adjusted the coloring a bit.

In my camera bag

This photo was taken several years ago so my set up had evolved but at that time I had my T5i and my 24mm! I use that set up to this day during my day job.

Feedback

The advice I would give any photographer who is wanting to make great content; keep an open mind. Knowing your style of photography is great but don't let that stop you from experimenting with other fields you have little to no experience with. I would also encourage my fellow photographers to have fun! Rent a fog machine and set up a scene in your back yard to play with. Why not!
