Ghent old town is a little of a farce, behind a lot of these old town facias new buildings have been erected and attached. It is however lovely to walk through these streets of the old town. This image is a blend of five images to capture the full dynamic range. I was annoyed that they had not cleaned their streets after a massive street or more accurately town party but in some ways the huge bags of rubbish and a 20 foot cold storage unit add to this image to my mind.

Behind The Lens

Location

Ghent in Belgium has a beautiful old town area cocooned within the modern town but is beautifully isolated from it's modern surroundings creating a lovely walk through the streets of the old town.

Time

The image was shot in the later blue hour maybe just after but we had deliberately timed the visit to coincide with a generous moon.

Lighting

Once you head outside of blue hour often there can be a harshness of the landscape of a city. Where planning and or opportunity allow I will try and shoot a city with a generous amount of moonlight, I like the blue that it introduces and it softens the contrast a little to the sodium street lights. In this particular image I was fortunate to get some mackerel cloud patterning the sky around the moon and surrounding illumination.

Equipment

Camera: Canon EOS 70D EF-S 10-22 Shutter release intervolometer Manfrotto 055cxpro3 Tripod Manfrotto 324 pistol grip head with RC2 quick release plate.

Inspiration

My wife wanted to go to Ghent and so we planned a trip from the uk collecting some dear friends in france and toured our way shooting various scenes. Each day had prepared day and night scenes taken in part from google city searches and further planned on the Planit Ap which is my personal go to shoot resource. One the night itself I wanted to combine the old city history with modern life. I was initially annoyed that they had not cleaned their streets after a massive street or more accurately town party but in some ways the huge bags of rubbish and a 20 foot cold storage refrigeration unit add to this image to my mind forcing both old and new to co exist together.

Editing

This image is a blend of five images to capture the full dynamic range, highlights within the buildings, shadows within the buildings, the clock face the moon and the street lights.

In my camera bag

At the time of shooting this image I was using a Canon 70d with my go to Canon 10-22 which is a great lens for crop sensors. Now i shoot a Canon 6d with Tamron 17-35 f2.8-3.5 and a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 for day and blue hour shooting. For astro shots I shoot either the Samyang 14mm f2.8 or the Samyang 24mm f1.4. My second body is a 7dii which has one of three lenses on it either a Tamron 70mm macro, a Canon 100-400 or my Tokina 11-16mm for star trails and time lapse. I carry a couple of low cost intervolometers, a remote trigger, 5 spare batteries, various filters, chemical hand warmers shortened cut thermal socks and plastic shower caps (the hand warmers are folded within the sock and the sock goes over the lens to prevent the formation of dew, the shower cap goes over the body and also limits dew, I also put it over the body during bad weather.

Feedback

Try and plan your trip around at least a 50% moon if you can. Avoid shooting purely brackets and expose for specific elements, in this I exposed a highlights and shadows for the buildings as the image, an exposure purely used for the clock face, one for the moon and one for the street lights where I wanted more of a star burst.
