Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was of the desert garden area of the Huntington Library and Gardens located in San Marino, CA.

Time

Afternoon lighting availed contrasting light source and lengthened shadows.

Lighting

Find the best angle as is possible to highlight contrast of shadows and elements. Day-lighting your subject with sunshine / shadowed with clouds or stark bright lighting is challenging. Practice the useful ability of moving around the subject to portray that special "frame."

Equipment

Most shots on this outing was with a Mamiya C330 Fixed Lens however, in this moment, I used my Samsung smartphone walking to set up my next shot.

Inspiration

Despicable Me was a much enjoyed feature film. The "minions" became iconic. As the lighting of these cacti gave the overwhelming Yellow Bald with Sticking Up Hair impression, I thought, "MINIONS!" And thus, the name.

Editing

The image was slightly overexposed. Post involved resetting the exposure and pushing up the vibrancy level a little.

In my camera bag

I mostly shoot 120mm film. I will typically carry a wide-angle, medium and zoom lens with various types of filters. I use the polarized filter. I also employ the yellow filter to enhance the sky for landscapes. In addition I have a pull-out lens shade to give a rounding effect at brightly lit day shoots. I vary between B&W 100 ISO Kodak and a few Fuji color films. I find the surprising 120mm film to be the Lomography films. 60 speed 16 aperture is daylight standard. I also shoot 120mm E6 positive film and cross-process for the "bam" effect of various subject matter. Most recent cross-processed are those showing the Model "A" Ford shoot, as an example. Another cross-process example, using the Kodak Brownie 3 x 6 frame fixed lens are those of the Ventura Pier on my site.

Feedback

Always be ready, when you are doing anything, at any time, day or night. "Telling a story," happens. "Be aware of your artistic awareness." Practicing to find the angles, the lighting, the framing and the subject will constantly happen as long as you are paying attention to the moment.
