Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Parque Natural de Tamadaba in Gran Canaria during my recent trip to Canary islands. We were a bunch of friends going for an ''action'' holidays. In that specific day we were about to climb the via ferrata La Guagua. Unfortunately the ferrata was taken down and we didn't know that. Hence we were desperately looking for it for couple of hours. At one point we realized that we are already too far up on the path, so we decided to go down. When we turned around I saw that the sun is low behind the mountains and I had a great idea about this photo. Since my friend was still visible on the path in front of me, I decided to take the chance and took this photo.

Time

We started the hike up to the via ferrata location from the village of San Pedro at around 10:30 AM. The hike should have taken about half an hour. Since we didn't see any visible traces of the via ferrata we continued upwards on the mountain. After walking for an hour we realized that we are too far away and decided to go back and search there. The photo was taken before the noon when we were close to the location of the via ferrata on our way down the mountain.

Lighting

I saw the sun coming over the background peaks and thought that it will be a great sunburst shot. So i reduced the aperture down to f20. I took couple shots with these settings and hoped for the best. Since I used a wide angle lens, I was afraid that some ugly lens glare will ruin the photo, however this one came out pretty impressive.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Nikon D3300 and Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 lens

Inspiration

Besides the beautiful landscape, it was mainly the position of the sun. I wanted to take some cool sunburst photos and this was a perfect occasion.

Editing

I usually post-process my photos in Lightroom. For this black and white photo I have worked on exposure, clarity and tone curve. Also some basic sharpening and noise removal.

In my camera bag

I am a relatively new photographer so I still shoot with my first DSLR - Nikon D3300. It is perfect for learning without spending too much money. Besides the camera, initially I had my kit 18-105mm lens and Nikon35mm f1.8 prime. In this spring I added Sigma wide angle 10-20mm f3.5 lens to my bag. I find the wide angle lens great for landscapes as well as via ferratas. Lately this is my most used lens. I also have a Manfrotto tripod, but don't take it up in the mountains.

Feedback

Simply put on your boots and go out and explore. You cannot anticipate when the right conditions will be, so you have to be there when the time comes. I don't think too much about getting a specific shot. For this particular photo I was surprised that the sun will be so low at noon, so I kept taking photos and this is the outcome. I try to enjoy my trips and shoot when I see something that interests me and attracts my attention. In this way I get the best outcome of my travels - great hiking experience and some good photos.
