In the Bahamas the premier festival is called Junkanoo and Bahamians never miss the opportunity to put on a show! The main festival is held on Dec.26th and Jan 1st smaller "rushouts" during national holidays, this photo is from the Independence Day celebration in July this year. . Junkanoo captures the heartbeat through the rhythmic (almost orgasmic) pounding of goat-skinned drums and the pulsating shaking of cowbells. The creativity of the Bahamian people is showcased in their costumes, dance and music. Nowhere else in the world is there such a display of talent all in one place! You can see and hear this festival on TV or radio but Junkanoo must be experienced in person to really appreciate it's entrancing and spellbinding magic!
