Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Island of Bali in Indonesia. Bali is one of the best destinations in SE Asia to go for making stunning photo's Bali has it all. Not only stunning landscapes stunning sunsets Bali is also the so called the Island of gods. Hindu gods because the Balinese practice the Hindu religion. Which you feel everywhere on the Island, In dance, in pray and at the thousands temples in every corner in every village around the Island. Two main Hindu epics are the Ramayana and the Mahabharata depicted in performances of dance. This photo is taken during one of those performances the so called Kecak dance Its the story also know as the Ramayana monkey chant. Or the fire dance and is traditionally performed in temples and villages across Bali

Time

The Kecak dance is performed daily in Uluwatu Temple every 6pm on cliff-side The performance which is outdoors shows the beautiful sunset at the background of the performance. The dance which the duration is about approx 60 min. When the highlighted of the dance begins the sun goes down fire is lit and the male dancers rise their hands above and chant...... kecak kecak just what this photo is shown

Lighting

The time of the day 6pm the sunset the blue hour the low light does makes you need to make the right choices of your camera settings. To much ISO and you get to much noise, the shutter speed must be just enough to not get only silhouette of the performers because the blacklight by the sun. If I can I avoid using a flash also this time I only use exiting light. The effect is much much nicer, light from the fire and sunset makes the photo more dramatically. Setting: Focal 28mm, Iso 3200, aperture f/5.6 , shutter speed 1/60

Equipment

This shot was taken with (at that time) with a Nikon d810, lens Zoom Nikkor 28-300mm I didn't use a tripod but an one pod and no flash was used

Inspiration

I am at the lucky circumstances that I have family living in Bali Indonesia so I visited Bali more then ones and probably more often in the future. This photo is one of the thousands of photo's I took in Bali from this performance I only took several hundreds. I often let my camera clicking a few per secound depending what kind of photography it is. From the hundreds photo's I take a few are really to my satisfaction the rest will be put in my files to look for later if it still use able for other or for stockphoto's

Editing

This kind of photo's during sunset, low light, landscape need post- processing. In my case I use Lightroom and photoshop

In my camera bag

De most photo's I take are photo's during my travels what I bring with me in my photo bag depending where I go to and what my plans are. But good preparation is essential. The gear I bring with me is Travel light or light plus I can choose to bring my best camera the Nikon Z7 with nikkor zoom 200-500mm lens if I go into nature, wild and/or birds or bring my Sony R7 with 70-120mm with gorilla tripod for a city trip or lighter work

Feedback

If you plan a trip to Bali or other countries in SE Asia keep an open mind the people are kind and friendly they have no problem if you are making pictures of them. If you make a portrait show them the picture you took they will be proud you took a photo of him/here. Bali has stunning sunsets and nature and landschap, rice fields, color full people to much to photograph so if you can concentrate to one project a day lucky for photographers who has only one specialisme for instance in street photography And not like me who like to photograph everything what is coming at front of my camera.
