I found these beautiful banyan trees in Hawaii. Fig seeds germinate in the crevices or branches of a host tree, eventually sending their own roots down to the ground, taking over the host. Really old ones can put so much pressure on the host tree that it dies, that it rots away, leaving a hollow core. Perfect shelter for animals.
