Lake George Wild Forest, Adirondacks, NY. The ice was a bit of a surprise, I hadn't noticed the cold that much in my preoccupation with angles and vantage points and keeping my feet relatively dry. It glittered like diamonds as the sunlight brightened, then faded behind clouds, and the forest moved in sunbeams, not strong enough to melt the recent dusting of snow. It's a small brook, but new to me, and discovery, for me, takes longer than most people would want to spend. It's why I hike alone most of the time--most people get frustrated at my stubborn side when I try to figure out what grabbed my attention. People have a best side, they say, and I guess that's true on a number of levels. I am fussy, I take too long, I don't talk enough, I think too much. I don't like to be rushed. But my heart tells me when it's right. It's a bit like love, isn't it. It's probably why I'm alone most of the time.
