Behind The Lens
Location
The flower was taken around mid-November at a very nice gardens in Chapel Hill, NC called the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. I shot this while instructing a college student location shoot. We had just had the first frost of the season. Most of the flowers were wilting. To me though, I still found beauty in this flower and a sense of a metaphor to life.Time
The image was shoot around mid-afternoon. It became just warm enough that the frost had melted away from most of the plants in the garden leaving it's effects behind it's wake.Lighting
The light on the flower was strong, but for the background I turned to the shadows to emphasize the light on the flower. I wanted a shallow depth of field to further emphasize the subject.Equipment
The image was shot with my Canon 5D3 and the canon 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens. The lens was set to 275mm and shot at an f/5.6, 1/500 sec. and ISO 320. I had to use ISO 320 in order to achieve the 1/500 sec. which I normally shoot at when using the 100-400mm lens based loosely on the Reciprocal Rule.Inspiration
Again,I find beauty where most people don't look. A lot of my photos are of subjects that many people never see or I strive for a different way of seeing them. A big factor of photography is paying attention to the light! It can turn even the most mundane subject into a surprise! I don't need to travel to exotic places to shoot, although not complaining when I get the chance, I find many of my pictures in my own back yard, so to speak.Editing
I post process through Adobe Lightroom. Not much was done other than normal processing. In my camera bag
My standard "carry around" bag is a Tamron 28-105mm f/2.8 macro and the 100-400mm used in the photo. I usually carry around my old 580 EX flash because it's smaller than the newest ones, but rarely use it. I always use a UV Haze, but carry around an ND and Polarizer. I always tell my students to have clean lens cleaning equipment with them. If you wear glasses, you'll know what I mean.Feedback
Best advice, learn how your camera "sees" in order to make it see the way you want it to see and pay close attention to the light and how it affects your subject. Finally, you are not JUST taking a picture of your subject. There is a background and foreground involved too. If interested...you can see more of my work at www.cmdphotos.com.
