From the Bourbon makers in Kentucky....the bourbon goes into the barrels as a clear alcohol and it is stored in the barrel for 2-4 years or longer, sometimes up to 23 years. As the temperature cools and heats it works the alcohol in and out of the barrel. This is what gives the bourbon it's color. This photo is from the rick house where the barrels are stored in the ageing process.
