A sea fortress from 1713 to after World War I, protecting the northern harbor entrace to Copenhagen and played a vital role in the defense of Copenhagen during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, and also played a role during the Copenhagen bombardment in 1807. During the German occupation 1940-45 it was used as barracks by the Germans and after the war it fell vacant until it was opened to the public in 1984.

The fortification was created by sinking three ships as a foundation and converted into an artificial island, one of the ships were called "Trekroner" (Three Crowns) and gave name to the island and fortification.
