Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image on the beach at Vera Playa, Almeria, south east Spain.

Time

It was about 15 minutes before sunrise, the weather system stretched from Barcelona in the north all the way down the coast to us here in the south east of Almeria. So for the time of year the image was taken it was about 06:30

Lighting

There are times of the year when the moister weather patterns allow for really colourful sunrises or sunsets. However these events dont last long, so there is maybe 1/2 an hour from when we start to get the first light through to sunrise. Then you just need luck and clouds at the right level to catch the sun. Most of the time it doesn't come to much, but when the light kicks off it is awesome.

Equipment

I shot this on my NIKON D750 with my 10-24 mm Nikon lens Aperture f3.5 ISO 100 Shutter 1/30 Focal Length 10 I think this was hand held, but now I nearly always use a tripod with a nice L-bracket

Inspiration

I live local to the playa and often start the day with a walk along the beach, I always have my camera with me and often I am rewarded with a stunning sunrise, which inspires the day. Over the years I have wittnessed many realy beautiful skies and always enjoy them, however this is one that stands out.

Editing

I use Adobes Lightroom as my main post processing tool. I find that it catalogs well and has a great set of tools to bring the best out of the RAWs in the develop module. I have looked at other tools but this one feels right for 99% of my post processing. I use PS, as well, but not very often.

In my camera bag

In my bag is a Nikon D750, 10-24 mm and an 18-200mm Nikon lenses, Olympus 8x20 field binoculars. I carry extra batteries and cards, a small blower, lens cloths and cleaner etc.. a bottle of water, sunblock, I live and work in Spain it is needed most of the year. Business cards for anyone who wants to know and find my work.

Feedback

For any sunrise photos, know your location, scout out places where you want to take the photos the day before. Try to find some foreground or midground interest. Always check the weather. Check the sunrise time for your location. Be patient and be prepared not to get the shot. And finally never leave the location too early.
