Unedited, Un-photoshopped. The Pro 1 was Canon's only compact camera with an 'L' lens. I miss that little camera :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the small island of Rum Cay, in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. It is only about 30 miles square and has a population of about 60 people. At the time this photo I took this photo, this dock was the only way for supply boats (called "mail boats" for obvious reasons) could dock. This is the natural colour of the water.

Time

I took this photo in late morning / early afternoon. I was there as a journalist and not as a photographer; and I didn't expect to see anything to shoot outside of my assignment, covering politicians. This was a delightful bonus.

Lighting

I used only natural lighting because I wanted the viewer to see as close to what I saw as possible. The water in the southern Bahamas is truly breathtaking -- but, then again, it is The Bahamas!

Equipment

This was actually handheld on a Canon Pro1 -- the only point-and-shoot Canon ever made with an 'L' lens on it. I Ioved that little camera :)

Inspiration

I wanted the viewer to be drawn into the scene and the perspective of the dock was a wonderful way to do that. So far, I have photographed about 27 islands and cays in The Bahamas and each one is a true gem!

Editing

No post-processing on the image here. Years later, I did; but went right back to the original.

In my camera bag

I usually don't carry a bag, opting instead for a photo vest for traveling through the islands. However, when I do travel internationally or on long trips, I carry two Canon 80Ds, a Canon 10-18mm, a Canon 18-135 IS USM, a Sigma 70-300mm (old version with no image stabilizer), a damaged Sigma 18-250 that over-exposes everything but has an enhanced low-light performance, a Canon 24mm 2.8 pancake, a travel tripod, a Rode Video Mic, several off-brand flashes, a universal flash diffuser, a lot of rechargeable batteries and a few external hard drives. Because I travel a lot on smaller planes and have lost a number of more-expensive lenses due to turbulence or whatnot when I used to use Nikon products, I have a number of good quality items that are not of a high sentimental or monetary value.

Feedback

When traveling to an island nation like The Bahamas, be prepared for warm weather, salt water and a lot wonderful chances to capture the moment. There are always opportunities around the corner and don't be afraid to ask locals for advise. They know the area best. Also, try different angles and lenses to get an interesting shot. I love my wide angle zooms for landscape and seascape images, and I usually start off shooting low to the ground and play around with other angles as I stand.
