Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my first solo overseas trip to Botswana, Africa when I was just new to the photography scene. In the Kasane area, roaming wild elephants are a common sight which I was very excited about as they are one of my favourite animals.

Time

This was taken on my way back from an early morning trip to catch the sunrise

Lighting

I was still learning about how lighting effects a shot, but I think I managed to get this one right! The lighting really helps the elephant stand out and show clearly showed off it’s textured skin

Equipment

This was shot on my old Panasonic LUMIX camera, my first ever decent camera! I would love to return one day now I’ve had a bit more experience and also upgraded to a DSLR camera

Inspiration

I was in awe of how beautiful and majestic these creatures are, I constantly had my camera out trying to capture these amazing creatures.

Editing

No this picture is all natural!

In my camera bag

Well as I’m still what I would consider a novice, I’m still amassing gear... but generally when I grab my bag to go shooting I ensure my Canon 800d aka Rebel T7i body is ready to go, the stock lens that came with the body 18-55mm and also my ef 75-300mm f/4-5.6 iii zoom lens which I know isn’t the best quality, but it’s efficient, light weight and in my price range which makes it ideal! Also I always ensure I have a spare SD card and battery (double check it’s been recharged though!!)

Feedback

Botswana is such an amazing country, I was there from the end of July till middle of September which was an ideal time for photography - avoiding the hot rainy season! As far as capturing wildlife, I highly recommend taking a land and water safari from Kasane, and visiting a great place called Senyati where you can watch wild animals, such as elephants come with their young to watering holes, especially on dusk! That was one of my favourite places on my trip. It’s definitely worth your while to visit Botswana!!
