The picture shows one of the symbols of modern architecture in Milan: the Pirelli tower designed by Gio Ponti with Pier Luigi Nervi’s collaboration. When it was built, in 1960, it was the taller skyscraper in Europe. It was the first building going beyond the high of Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) and, in respect of the latter, it was placed at the top of the tower a replica of the statue of Madonnina del Duomo. Its peculiar diamond form inspired the MetLife Building (former Pan Am building) in New York.
