Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the entrance to the rooftop at the Art Factory in Paterson,NJ where I had a studio as well as access to all of the open locations in an industrial campus. This on the top floor at a doorway looking onto the rooftop.

Time

It was early on a rainy morning. The rooftop glistening with the wet covering of fresh rain. It was a calm atmosphere for my client and I. I had done a similar shot a few weeks before and came back to this one with some revisions that would take this idea to a higher level.

Lighting

I wanted my off-camera lighting to change what would ordinarily be a silhouette into something a bit more natural looking; more open with just a bit of light filling in some of the detail. I brushed The light passed the model to make sure that it hit the doorway on the left side to complete the framing. I brought a ladder with me to get a better point of view on the subject. I had shot this concept a few weeks before from the floor and the angle was not what I needed. I was very happy with this result.

Equipment

The camera is the least important factor in creating an image. I cannot stress this enough. Photographers should decide mostly how much compression do they want and choose the lens that gives them the right amount of depth of field and clarity. I honestly don’t remember which brand I used because I have a number of brands and I picked up whichever camera was fully charged LOL. The lighting however, it is very important it was off camera battery powered powerful light using a 60 inch umbrella feathered to brush across the model and onto the door.

Inspiration

It was my practice every day to start off by walking around all of the floors of the building where I had my studio. It was a chance to get some exercise and just clear my mind. Some days it would be a walk with no particular intent. But on other days I would see something that inspired me to create that image when the opportunity was ripe. I visualized this idea when walking past the doorway on a sunny day. I checked the weather and saw that it would be rain later in the week overnight which would leave an early morning mystique.

Editing

This image was pretty good straight out of camera. I’m a firm believer in getting everything as right as possible when clicking the shutter. This image took less than two minutes to process. I gave it the normal tonal adjustment and cropped it.

In my camera bag

I think more in terms of what I have in my car. First, a great assistant who knows my gear and how to put it together. Sandbags, C stands scrims silks and reflectors. An array of umbrellas for indoor but rarely for outdoors. What goes into the bag is only the bodies and lenses needed for that shoot and maybe a few extra lenses just in case. Most important is to have enough battery power to finish the assignment. Always make sure all the batteries you need are fully charged.

Feedback

Seize the moment!! The setting for the picture discussed, no longer exists. If you went there today, the background would be a huge air conditioning unit which would make this an entirely different idea. Things change so rapidly in this world. If you have an idea, go for it as quickly as possible. I once made a mental note to photograph an exquisite blooming Poppy the next day. When I went back the next day the petals had all dropped and it was not the object I had seen only 12 hours before. Work with the environment at hand. Become one with it, understand it and exalt it in your images.
