This wooden stave church is dedicated to Saint Andrew. The construction of the St. Andrew's crosses are used to this holy name. The church was probably built around 1150. In addition, it probably replaced an earlier church. During archaeological research under the floor remains of an older church or a pagan temple.

The Borgund Stave Church is the best known of the 28 stave churches that are found in Norway. This is because it has preserved its medieval character. This church is also one of the largest remaining stave churches.
