Love this area of the country. Agathla Peak is lot of fun to shoot. Nice B&W.

Thanks a lot Jake. It does resemble Shiprock. This monolith is located just south of Monument Valley in AZ.

Location
This image was taken in Northern Arizona, just north of the town of Kayenta. This area is part of the Navajo Tribal Park, which includes Monument Valley. The Navajo call this monolith Agathlan.Time
This photograph was taken early in the morning, just after sunrise.Lighting
Because it was early morning the sun was low on the horizon and one directional.Equipment
This image was captured using a Nikon D3200 and a Nikon 24-85mm lens. An Oben tripod was used to steady the camera.Inspiration
I was up early, driving north on Hwy 163, when Agathlan appeared in front of me. With the morning light illuminating the monolith it was like a seneschal watching over the valley. I immediately found a place to pull off the road and set up my camera.Editing
The post processing was minimal. Adjusted contrast, clarity, and highlights. In my camera bag
I keep it pretty simple. I carry two cameras. D3200 and D7100. Two lenses,a 24-85 and a wide angle 10-24 both Nikon. A polarizing filter and two neutral density filters.Feedback
As with most landscape images, light is everything. Whether shooting color or B&W, morning or evening light is preferable. The light at these times is usually softer and somewhat diffused. It also accentuates shadows and gives the subject beautiful detail. When shooting landscapes I always like to have an interesting sky, clouds add interest and sometimes drama to an image. A neutral density filter is a great way to add drama to an otherwise ordinary image. At the time I took this photograph I was unaware of how a neutral density filter and a long exposure can enhance an image.
