Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this Grizzly while visiting the San Francisco Zoo. He was not being very social, so I had to move to where I could get his face in the shot.

Time

This was early afternoon, but with the ever present fog of San Francisco, the light is really diffused almost all day long, giving multiple hours of fairly decent light without harsh shadows.

Lighting

No flash, all natural light and shot through a window on the end of the exhibit. I had to ensure no reflection of other people, so quite a bit of time was spent hitting the sweet spot where I could see the face of the grizzly while not seeing any (or minimal) reflections.

Equipment

Shot with my Canon t5i and 100/300 lens. No flash. No Tripod. I do use a hand strap on my camera to help steady when shooting zoomed way in.

Inspiration

This was inspired by the sadness I read in the Grizzly's demeanor and expression.

Editing

The only post work was a tighter crop to eliminate some reflection on the edge, and light balance to increase shadow contrast.

In my camera bag

Canon t5i, Canon 75-200 and 100-300 lens' - that's my every day kit.

Feedback

Get up as close as you can, be patient for the crowds to disperse and for the moment you want. Shoot several angles if possible, and be relentless with any image that is less than what you want exactly. Make several visits if you need to, and shoot things based on what you feel about it at the moment.
