The Paraguayan farmers are dying. As more and more land is being illegally purchased by multinational companies like Monsanto, Paraguay is losing its flora and fauna as huge territories are being deforested and used to cultivate soy beans, corn and sugar canes.
This village was situated next to a corn field own by one of these companies. The corn field was sprayed with pesticides several times and many villagers were affected by the toxic clouds of pesticide. Two children had died just three months before my arrival.
Many farmers are standing up for their rights and against these huge companies. Unfortunately the corruption in Paraguay makes it very difficult for the villagers as both government and police enforce these illegal acts arresting and even killing farmers.
When I arrived to the village I was met by all the villagers that had gathered to welcome me. The village chief took me to his house, a simple worn down wooden shack. He told me about his life, the struggle against multinational companies and the future while the sun found its way through the walls.
