Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Kuta Beach in Bali at one of the many beach bars. I always have a camera of some sort with me whether that is my DSLR or my phone and this is one of the best times to have it in Bali.

Time

We frequent this spot an hour before sunset to relax before dinner after eating, drinking, shopping and touring all that Bali has to offer.

Lighting

The sunset speaks for itself. I wanted to use it to create a relaxed atmosphere with the darkened umbrellas and people enjoying the sunset.

Equipment

This photo was shot handheld with a Canon 50D and a standard 18-55mm kit lens. No flash.

Inspiration

Experiencing so many great sunsets on Kuta beach I wanted to capture what it is like to sit on the beach, balmy atmosphere with beverage of choice in hand while watching the Sun go down. Acoustic guitars and chill beach music can be heard from various places nearby.

Editing

Using a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop I slightly darkened the image, tweaked the saturation up a bit and added star burst lighting to the Sun to give the rays a little more impact.

In my camera bag

I usually take a 20mm f1.4 Sigma Art lens and an 18-55mm kit lens to go with my Canon 50D body. I also take my Mavic Air drone as well and always have my phone in which I do some pre-framing of my photos with it.

Feedback

Keep an eye on the weather and pick a few days not just one to take your photos. Take photos at regular intervals and from different locations. Get to your destination early to pre plan where and what you want to capture.
