Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in our bedroom at our home in Virginia.

Time

Captured in mid-morning. My son was in school so it was a quiet morning with just me and my daughter before they hectic, regular day got started.

Lighting

This is nautical backlit window light. I wanted to showcase her tiny silhouette against the large window and tucked between the large furniture.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon 6d with a 35mm f1.4 lens. Handheld and natural window and ambient light.

Inspiration

My husband is military and was deployed for most of my two children’s first years of life. I tried to capture as much of our day to day life to share with him as I could. There are so many pictures like this of o to regular day to day lives.

Editing

This was edited in Adobe camera RAW, converted to black and white with some contrast added and straightened.

In my camera bag

My bag is ever changing. For client work I will use a variety of external flashes and reflectors and typically shoot with my Canon 6d and Canon 5d mark ii, and 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200 mm f/2.8 lenses. For my own family shots, I typically use my 50mm f/1.8. It was my first lens and indestructible with pretty bokeh and minimal distortion.

Feedback

Look for framing and repeating shapes and patterns in your regular day to day! You will be surprised how many beautiful moments are tucked away in your house right now. Keep it simple and remember capturing the feeling of the moment is just as important as the technical stuff. Art and beauty are subjective, so shoot what makes you happy.
