Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. I took it at the hospital during the birth of my second child, Samantha, merely seconds after she was born when they were first showing her to her mother.

Time

This was around 5PM.

Lighting

The lighting was terrible in that room, a mix of neon from the ceiling, a spotlight and sunlight from the window behind me.

Equipment

Camera was a Nikon D7000, 50mm lens @ f4. No flash used.

Inspiration

I got some good shots during my fist child's birth, but this time I wanted to capture everything as it happened. At the time, my wife wasn't too pleased to hear the camera clicking away. Now she's really happy that I did that and that we have this memory captured!

Editing

I think I did a few normal tweaks on lighting, curves, contrast and black and white processing, in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Most of the time one camera, a 85mm and 17-55mm lens. For this situation I brought my 50mm with me, that's it.

Feedback

If you are able to capture it, you won't regret it. Be ready, it happens so fast. Probably better to wait until the second time around since the situation will be more familiar.
