Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales Florida. It's a great place for flowers, bird, just going for a walk etc.Time
This was shot mid morning in August. I remember how hot it got and I wanted to keep shooting but the heat was a little to much.Lighting
This is all natural lighting. No, flash, reflectors etc. just what was there.Equipment
Canon 5D MK II, Canon 100 Macro lens. I had a flash mounted on the camera but did not use it. I had the flash to stop movement on what I call real macro shots (1:1 or above magnification). Instead I bumped the ISO up to 400 to use 1/200th of a second. The key was really trying to get a good angle as the flower was very high and you couldn't get closer as it is in a garden.Inspiration
The lighting and background inspired me. Usually I try to get extreme close ups, but when I saw this is just popped (in color)Editing
Post processing with this was by accident. There was a challenge for Black and White bugs and I had never tried converting any so I didn't know what would convert well. I tried a some and some came out great - others were a complete failure. I wish I could say do this for a great black and white shot, but I can't, all I can say is when processing just click on the Black and White tab and take a look. You can't go wrong and maybe pleasantly surprised. In my camera bag
Over the years my bags and what I carry have changed. What has not changed that much is that usually I pack each item item individually (each has a lens case) once I get where I am going I only pull out what I think I will need. Usually this means perhaps one extra lens and these are in quick change bags. If I want more than one I put them in a thin nylon bag. I think the bag is parachute material, it is super strong and light weight. If I do go out with a bag it is an old portfolio bag with a camera bag insert (it has three deep slots). In it are 2 Canon SL1's and a Canon T3i converted to 720nm. This thing weighs next to nothing compared to my full frame camera and L series lenses. What is nice about this is for the most part I don't have to change lenses. One SL1 has a 10-18 and the other the 18-135. The T3i has a 17-40, I would prefer another 18-135 but I have the 17-40. Also in this bag I have a 70-300.Feedback
Always look at your surroundings for different opportunities. I was taking photos of small insects and then I saw this and it just popped. I changed the settings quickly to get the shot before the butterfly left. If I was there taking photos of butterflies I probably would have used my 180 macro (I have since sold this as I didn't find enough uses for it). The point is, look around, take the shot, try other processing etc.
