Thanks very much Viewbug and the judges who kindly awarded this image as Grand Winner and Members Selection Award. Very exciting and so encouraging.

Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in Addo Game Park in the Eastern Cape, on a lovely hot summers day. We were surrounded by about 300 elephants and their babies, and this adorable little baby caught my eye getting a lift up with his mothers tail!

Time

Probably around 10 or 11am a very hot day

Lighting

Only natural light.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 5D MK11 using Canon 70-100 2.8 lens and 1.4 extender. Using the car window to balance, no tripod.

Inspiration

Who could resist such an image, not often that you would see something like this to my mind. Probably my favourite wild life. A very cheeky little elie!!

Editing

Yes in photo shop, but the minimum, as for Salons you are not allowed to do much, you cannot alter the image in any way

In my camera bag

Depending on what I am shooting. If its wild life I carry my 70-100 Canon 2.8 lens, my 1.4 extender and my Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lens. For normal shooting 24-70 2.8 lens and Canon 50mm 1.8. For portrait, Canon 85mm 1.2, and Canon 24-70mm and maybe my Canon Macro lens. I do have a wide angle lens, but do not use it very often. Not being as young and strong as I would like to be, the less heavy equipment I have to carry the better! To be absolutely honest, I think these new small camera that people seem to now be favouring, and which seem to do most things, might be a very good option to look at!

Feedback

If you are shooting wildlife in a game park, its best to try and have your camera set up before, so you can just point and shoot, the more you have to fiddle, the more likely you are to loose the picture. If you want to shoot elephants, then you need to choose a very hot and sunny day, they do not like rain.
