Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Basque Country, Spain. As may you know, the northern coast of Spain is a paradise for landscape photography. It includes fantastic rock formations all around the coast creating perfect locations to shot sunrises and sunsets using the seascape as a background. This spot is located at Meñakoz Beach, very close to the main city of Bizkaia, Bilbao.

Time

One of my favourite things about landscape photography is to discover incredible spots. I came here very early to analyze the spot, the shape and distribution of the rocks, in order to find a correct composition. After waiting a couple of hours there, the sun started his way down and the light was perfect. The photo is a result of a sunset over this beautiful rock formation.

Lighting

The lighting is totally natural. I worked during the golden hour to obtain the best quality light.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon Eos 6D with a Canon 17-40mm f/4 USM and using the tripod Manfrotto 190X. Also, in order to control the light and increase a little bit the saturation of the sky, I used a ND0,6 reverse grad.

Inspiration

I was doing a photographic work based on the geological wonders of the Basque coast. I came here for the importance of these rocks, because his volcanic background. So I found quite interesting the contrast between the black rocks and the ocean, and I decided to pay attention on this composition.

Editing

Generally, the landscape photography requires a selective digital edition. In this case, I worked in a first step with adobe lightroom and to enhance the atmosphere and details with photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always go out there with a heavy bag at my back, something not really good for me in therms of back-healthy but I can leave at home all my equipment. This include, a Canon Eos 6D, Canon 17-40mm f/4 USM, Samyang 14 mm f/2.8 and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 USM. Also, I used to have the Kase Filter system, including a ND10, ND6, and ND0,6 Grad.

Feedback

The seascape photography requires a good planning taking into account the hours of light, the tides, and many other things. Also, in order to enjoy and maximized your results, try to be at the spot 2 or 3 hours before the best light to study the different options and compositions.
