Bethlehem Steel Furnace ~ Home of Thor’s Hammer
Not really, but it sounds cool as hell.
Founded in 1857 under another name, Saucona Iron Company, the second largest steel producer and largest ship builder was born.
After a decline in the American steel industry and other problems leading to the company’s bankruptcy in 2001, the company was dissolved and the remaining assets sold to International Steel Group in 2003. But the stacks refused to be dismantled. The location is so loved by the community they made the stacks the unofficial icon of the town. The stacks are now the backdrop to a community park and concert venue.
