Behind The Lens

Location

I have take this photo in Najafgad drain Delhi India it’s a good place for bird weather and bird photographers. At that time it wasn’t disturbed by locals but now many new builders making new buildings there so the habitat is getting disturbed but you still can find many birds there.

Time

We left home early morning and reached there in time but at that birds were not that active as the weather was sunny cloudy. Later all birds get very active specially the Bee eaters. I clicked this photo nearly 9 to 9.30 am.

Lighting

Yes I prefer cleaning birds in soft light so I try to go on sunny cloudy day I know it’s not always possible so try walking up early and click in diagonal light. Overhead sun and harsh light ruin any photography except street photography.

Equipment

I don’t use any artificial light source for bird photography. The lens I used for this photo was 70-200 F 2.8 canon lens with Canon 60 D it was my first equipment now I use Nikon with 80-400 as reach of 200 zoom is too less for bird photography. The shot was handled as at that time I was not having any tripod. No I prefer using monopod with ball head as it give more flexibility but if you want to click flying shots I recommend to use tripod with gimbal head.

Inspiration

The light was good and green colors birds looks so vibrant their sitting positions were inspiring me but it took 40 minutes to get the right position shot.

Editing

Yes I did cropping and increases the contrast with a little increased saturation and digresses the vividness by that the features of birds get more visible. If you increase vividness you suppress the features so I mostly increase saturation and decrease vividness.

In my camera bag

I now mostly have Nikon 80-400 f 4.6 with Nikon D5300 for better reach for birds as crop factor give me each of more than 500 with the same lens. And I always have Nikon D 750 with macro lens 100 mm f 2.8 and 24-120 F4 lens. Beside that lens cleaning pen a cleaning cloth alcohol swabs. Rain cover as it’s always raining in Vancouver Canada and my favorite fishing chair which help me in low angles shots. Most of the time monopod but if not carryon one then one extra bag belt to make shot more stable with a trick.

Feedback

Everyone have their own style and ways of photography but yes shoot in soft light birds don’t looks good in harsh light. Patience is the key take some records shot two simple quick portraits then wait for something interesting to happen. I waited 40 minutes for this cross position before that clicked few portraits shots of them.
