Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at huntly on the Waikato river, NZ.

Time

I was in the area, downstream of the bridge, looking to capture something like a tree line or building with the river, i was focusing on the power station on the river and hoping for a sunset against the chimney stacks. Nothing extatic came to my vision and it was getting late, so i began wandering along the river to my vehicle, it was about 10:30 pm when I heard a train crossing the bridge. As I was looking, the clouds cleared a bit allowing more light and a remaining streak of cloud above curved. With the lights reflecting on the water from the vehicle bridge and the rail bridge, I saw a picture.

Lighting

I only used natural lighting, from the lights on the bridges, their reflections and the clearing sky, allowing the moonlight through.

Equipment

I was using a Canon EOS 1D MkIII. on a tripod, with a 50mm lens f8 exposure time was 00.25. I had no artificial lighting at all. I did not have time to make sure I had the best settings on the camera, before the moment went.

Inspiration

Something about the clouds falling ay and the thin streak of cloud remaining curving, i nearly missed the photo, as the clouds were on the move very fast, as was the train on the bridge and the opportunity was rapidly disappearing. The reflection on the glassy water was another reason, as the river rarely displays a flatness.

Editing

I took the photo in RAW and used photoshop to monochrome it. I did very little adjustments, as I was not very capable at using photoshop at the time

In my camera bag

I was limited then, just my Canon EOS 1D MkIII, a polaroid filter an ND and ND grad filter a 50mm prime lens and a 70-300 zoom lens and a tripod. I now have a 35mm prime lens and a canon 100-400 zoom lens. I have also added a flash and some home made LED lighting stands for night work. I am trying to add items bit by bit as I can afford them.

Feedback

I managed to shoot this photo because, even though it was normally too dark for me to take a photo with only my tripod and camera, I never stopped looking for something to appear in front of me. To me, there was little magic in that scene by the daylight and it did not really take shape until after sunset, the golden hour. I have adopted the philosophy of looking outside the square and being patient, then it will happen.
