Great shot!

Behind The Lens

Location

Place de la Trocadero, Paris, France

Time

lunchtime - all the tourist were queuing up for hot-dogs. That's why the space opened up for me to take the shot in the first place.

Lighting

Nothing hectic going on here - made sure to keep the camera in the full shade to maximize the contrast between the steel subject and the cobalt-blue sky beyond

Equipment

Canon Rebel XT1, 18-55mm kit lens. I was lying down on the cold, hard ground looking straight up - the gendarmes were not impressed and tried to move me on but I was keen to get centrally under the tower. You can see from the image that I did not succeed; the obvious lack of symmetry galls me a bit.

Inspiration

I am a structural draughtsman by trade - the latticed steel-work just mesmerized me.

Editing

Yes - switched to B&W and fiddled with the contrast a bit. The aim was for something monochromatic that would print well onto a canvas mount.

In my camera bag

Filters - ND2, ND4, ND8 and polarising. Oh, Canon Rebel XTi also.......... Canon EF 18-55mm f4-5.6 and Sigma 70-300mm f3.5-6 (or something like that)

Feedback

Have a plan. Know how the image you want to capture will look before you leave home that day.
