My husband and I went camping. We wanted to travel back roads from Chinook, Mt to Big Sandy, Mt. A friend gave us directions but we missed the turn onto Sucker Creek Rd. After a while it was getting dark and we wandered and wandered so many miles through the mountains we wondered if we'd come out on the road we wanted, or if we'd have to turn around and back track. At one point we stopped to take this photo, and some people came down the road in their truck. They were able to give us directions and we came out where we needed to be. I'm glad we got lost so we could capture this sunset!

Gorgeous - and composing to include the cabin makes it extra-special.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was in the Bears Paw Mountains in Montana, an area of legend and lore. It's a bit north of Central Montana.

Time

Robert and I had been camping for several days along the MIssouri River, watching herds of elk during the rut. We were on our way home, and decided to take the long way so we could go through the Bears Paw Mountains. It was late when we entered the rolling hills. We had our camper on the truck, so we didn't care...we figured we'd stop when it got dark, no matter where we were. We turned off the main road onto a tiny track across the hills, wondering as we went along if this trail would take us out of the mountains or end without warning! The road was winding, it was getting dark, when the colored light of sunset stole it's way across this scene. Robert and I have an agreement, if I suddenly yell, "Stop!" he doesn't get upset, if there's no traffic he stops, because he knows I want a photo. I raised the camera and took this photograph.

Lighting

The lighting for this photo was the natural, end of the day lighting of a sunset, the golden hour had gone, the light was dim when the last of the sunset lit up the sky.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D and I believe the 70-200 Canon f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This photo seemed the perfect ending, of a perfect day. Our camping trip was close to an end, the day was ending....then we saw this beautiful sunlight hitting the clouds, the wonderful cabin at the foot of the hill, gave the scene a warm coziness...it was perfect.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Aurora HDR to process this photo. I used several masks and filters to bring out the light as the original photo was very dark.

In my camera bag

Back when I took this photo, we had the 7dM2, and the Canon f2.8 70-200 lens. We've since added a 5DM2, Sigma 150-600 Sport lens, and the Canon f4 600 prime. We use a Tamron telephoto for scenery now.

Feedback

The best thing for scenes like these are simply to be outside, with your gear, and to see what is happening! Sitting in the house will not get you photos like this.
