Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at the penthouse of the NorthWest; Logan's Pass in Glacier National Park. My girlfriend had her brother tag along so they could go fishing, and we double-booked the day and drove up to go try to find Hidden Lake in the dark. Suffice to say, it remained hidden. The Milky Way was more than happy to come out and play, though ;)Time
We made it back to the car earlier than we thought. So I want to say this shot was a little before midnight.Lighting
I had brought my LED studio (216 bulbs) light with me, but for the most part ended up just trying out some light-painting with my little flashlight. It was chilly for early summer, and I didn't always have the chance or time to stop my girlfriend and take the bigger light out of the backpack to get more of the foreground. Light-painting during long exposure is still a new experience to me, so many of my shots had the ground a little more exposed than I'd like. Even on this one, I believe I had to darken the ground a bit in editing ;)Equipment
Shot with my low-light monster, the Sony A7s; with Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens. This lens is Full-Frame star-gazer's best friend! If you go by the "500 rule", then this lens lets you use your camera's 30sec shutter setting without having to worry one bit about star-trails! Now, stars in the corner of the image are a different story, as this lens does have quite a bit of edge distortion.Inspiration
It's been a dream of mine for a while to be up behind the Visitor Center on Logan's Pass at night; even more of a dream to shoot it now that I'm proficient in photography; and the cherry on top was the allusion of a solar flare sending some fantastic Aurora our way! Sadly, the Lights didn't happen that night. But 2 out of 3 dreams aren't bad!Editing
This shot is two, if not three photos stitched together. I didn't do nearly as big of a panning move as I could've, with this crazy wide 14mm and all! I'd rather have a reasonable sized shot and make sure the edges I want are nice and sharp, than have more area capture and have to crop it all away because of the images not stitching correctly in post.In my camera bag
I finally have enough lenses to fill up all my slots in my bag! Although now the size and shape variance hiders what all I take. In my soft case, I normally attach my little Canon nFD 50mm lens to my already small A7s body and stick that in the middle section. The right side holds my hotshoe Opteka mic and Zoom H1 - now probably replaced with air-blower. On the left is variable. Any combination of Sigma 28-70, Rokinon 14, Rokinon 85, or Sigma 70-210 - another small lens; so sometimes I'll keep the 28-70 on the body and stack the 50mm and the 70-210 securely on top of another in one divider section. Since the 85mm range is covered in that setup, the last section usually has the Rokinon 14mm - a pain sometimes due to the very large front portion.Feedback
If you have a favorite spot [to shoot or just visit] during the day, or even just know of a great landmark; never be afraid to try it out at night!
