Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my in-law's house after a hot relaxing shower. We used to travel a lot and spending time relaxing with family was always a treat since we don't get to see them often.

Time

I believe this was taken in the evening just after a hot shower. I remember we had been traveling for several week and just arrived and all we wanted to do was go to bed. I can't every sleep very well unless I take a shower first and my wife and her parents were catching up anyway so I decided to try some mirror photography.

Lighting

This was actually my first attempt at a self portrait in a mirror. I tried several things but I found I liked the way it kind of made things look mysterious with the lights above the mirror right in my face and the dark background. I tried a flash but that just washed out my face and created ugly shadows.

Equipment

I actually used an iphone for this one because at the time I didn't have a nicer camera. And, as I mentioned before, we had just gotten home from several weeks of shower. My phone was handy so I turned it to "selfie" mode and took some pictures. It was kind of hard to look straight into the mirror and hold the phone to the side without looking like I was the one holding the phone. It took several tries to get it the way I liked it.

Inspiration

I was actually looking through portrait mirror photos on ViewBug and thought I'd try it. Portraits aren't my favorite thing because I'm not really a people person and I especially don't like my own face. My natural face has a bit of a frown to it as you can see. I did try and look a little sad or contemplative for this shot but I'm still not sure how it comes across.

Editing

Actually this is two pictures. The fist is just the fogged mirror and the second is with me after I had wiped away the water. I used an app on my phone (I can't remember which one) to put the two together and "wipe" away some of the fog to see my face. That part was actually kind of fun because I hadn't done that before either.

In my camera bag

That was just an iPhone. Now I have a Cannon Rebel T6. I usually just use the standard 18-55mm lens. I also have a 75-300mm lens in there and some lens filters for macro and tenting. I'm barely a hobbies photographer so nothing very fancy. I do have a tripod but I don't usually have a lot of time to spend a day or even hours shooting. It's usually just a few minutes or an hour at most when I just grab my camera and shoot some nature. If I see something particularly interesting, I might run to the house and grab my camera and take some shots but it's usually nothing extensive.

Feedback

I don't know what advice I can give about capturing photos like this one. I would just say try something. If you don't like it, change something and try it again. Remember, you are your worst critique usually so even if you don't like it that much, post it and see what others have to say about it. That's what I like about ViewBug, it's just a friendly place where I can get some feedback and try new things, both with my shots and with my edits. Have fun. That's what photography is all about anyway.
