Antonio Rodrigues was born in 1831 on the island of Madeira. He arrived in Lyttleton on the ship Wesminister with his wife Adelaide in 1858. They then travelled to Akaroa. In 1870 after working as a baker, then at the Commercial and Criterion Hotels, he purchased the section on the township side of the present hotel. Just two years later in 1872 the ‘Year Book’ listed him as proprietor of the Madeira Hotel. Te hotel is situated on Rue Lavaud, Akaroa.
