Location
I took this photo a few years ago at Jacksonville Beach Florida. I lived 5 miles from the beach at the time. I now live in Saint Augustine Florida about 30 miles to the south. It was early morning, one of those mornings when the sky and clouds and colors were just fabulous.Time
I got to the beach just before sunrise. I took shots for a couple hours.Lighting
The light was all natural. It was amazing.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3100. I think I just had on my standard 18-55 zoom, slightly zoomed. I think I had on an amber filter to intensify the already brilliant colors even more. Handheld with no flash.Inspiration
I was there to take shots of the awesome sunrise over the ocean. When I saw this young couple I was struck with the symbolism and emotion that this shot could convey. I was lucky. I'm pretty much self taught. But I do draw and paint in watercolors and have had some training in art. So my interest in photography started as a way to capture references for my art. As time went on I began to respect photography as art in itself. So I look at my shots as possibly paintings, or paintings in themselves sometimes. I focus on Nature, Animals and Wildlife, Color and Emotion and just the beauty of God's Creation in general.Editing
Yes. I usually tweak my photos in Photoshop Elements. I tried to go as far as I could without making the colors gaudy, although maybe close to that. I wanted to make sure that the couple came out as silhouettes because I wanted them to be representational as opposed to individuals. In my camera bag
I have a Pentax K1000, which I started on. It is all manual (not digital) which forced me to learn a little. Later I added My Nikon D3100. It was what I could afford. I have its standard 18-55 zoom and a 55-200 zoom. I almost always use a polarizer and sometimes play with other filters.Feedback
For me--I find if I take a whole lot of shots that some of them come out really good. I would encourage anyone who loves photography to study art, as in drawings and paintings at least a little. See what makes them special. Even when you can't actually put it into words, you can usually FEEL it. Take that feeling with you. Be passionate about something and often that passion will almost magically come out in your work.
