The Black-Crowned Heron breeds at 3 years. Males will display for the female by bowing and stretching and will rock back and forth on his feet. He hisses and claps his bill during display, rubbing his bill over the bill, head, and neck and back of his mate after pairing. When greeting one another, they will stretch their necks horizontally and erect the plumbs on their heads and rub bills. At the time of breeding, the legs of both sexes turn pink. They nest in colonies, preferring to nest up in a tree which makes it harder for predators such as crows to see their nests. The nest is a platform of sticks. The female lays 1-6 pale greenish eggs which are incubated about 25 days. Heron are very vocal on the nest. The young are covered in gray down and are feed by regurgitation. White filaments stick up from their heads, their beaks are dull yellow and their feet are green. They will begin to climb out of the nest at about 3 weeks, but won’t go far away. They will begin to fledge at 6-7 weeks.
