The Alto Douro Wine Region is a particularly representative part of the landscape that characterizes the vast region the Douro, the oldest regulated wine-growing region of the world. The cultural landscape of the Alto Douro combines the monumental nature of the valley of the River Douro, made of steep slopes and poor soil and rough, with ancestral and continuous action of man, adapting the space to the agricultural needs of Mediterranean type that the region supports. This intimate relationship between human activity and nature has brought a single value ecosystem, where the terrain features are utilized in an exemplary manner, with the modeling of the landscape in terraces, preserving it from erosion and allowing the cultivation of the vine.
