Behind The Lens

Location

This is a composite. The tree is at the side of a road in North Yorkshire, the sunset was taken on the coast, also in North Yorkshire.

Time

The sunset was, obviously at sunset. we get some terrific colours on the coast. The tree was taken at about midday. .The sky was blue and relatively cloudless.

Lighting

It is all natural lighting.

Equipment

I used a Canon 450D with a sigma 17-70 mm lens at f4 for both shots, aperture priority and hand held

Inspiration

I wanted to generate a moody rendition of a tree in winter with a reflection in a lake or pond

Editing

I used the sunset as a background and then superimposed the tree on top with a 'multiply' blending mode. I then copied and flipped the two and stitched them together, giving the lower half a slight blur.

In my camera bag

Since I took these pictures and manipulated them I have graduated from the Canon 450D, whch I still use as it has a 1.6 crop. I also have a canon 6D mkII, which is full frame an a small M50 with the 15-45mm kit lens. I tend to take with me my Sigma 150-600mm, as well as the 17-70 which I reserve for use with the 450D, as it is a for cropped frames.. I also keep handy a EF70-200 L and have a EFS 55-250.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to experiment in post development. What the shutter sees and what you develop in post processing can be very different. I like to limit my development to the sort of thing I feel I could do in a wet darkroom with conventional film. As digital resolution is not as fime as film, I do allow myself to sharpen!
