Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a studio I hired in a Melbourne cbd. It was the first time I’ve hired a studio and model. we took some great shots but boy did we make a mess!

Time

I remember it was a half day studio booking and I picked noon till 4. It was a nightmare dropping off my lighting outside the studio then trying to find a carpark. Leaving my gear on the street with a model I had just met was a little scary but it all worked out :)

Lighting

With this series, I used strip lighting camera left and right with flags. I wanted to light the powder slightly more than the model to capture the movement and freeze the arc.

Equipment

At the time I believe it was my trusty canon 5DMkii and two Bowen’s monoblocks 750watt heads with strip soft boxes gridded. I did use a tripod as we were in a studio and I had lined the floor with a large plastic sheet that the model had to stay in.

Inspiration

I’ve always wanted to recreate an image I saw of a ballerina mid jump with powder and this was a variation of that, Nude. I’ve always liked low key art Nude portraits that had some element of movement. Since then I’ve focused more on underwater shots that helps slow down the movement, especially N hair and fabrics

Editing

As a photographer, I’m at terrible post production. I use Lightroom and have no idea about photoshop. On my list of things to learn. I try to get it right in camera as best as I can.

In my camera bag

Usually just my 24mm prime on a 1Dx.

Feedback

This is a really easy and fun concept to try. Mix a bit of flour and talcum powder together for the large blobs and fine trails. Get the model to release equal amounts of powder as they create large movements with arms and legs. Don’t be shy to put powder In hair, across shoulders and any horizontal part of the body before they start the routine. Oh and have a broom handy :)
