Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Lake Nabugabo in Uganda. Many people in the local community are dependent on the lake for their livelihood and each morning men head out in their wooden canoes to fish and check any nets they may have laid overnight.

Time

This was taken at dawn, somewhere around 6.30 am just as the sun was starting to rise. I loved the gentle way the pinks in the sky were reflected in the still water. The only movement in the scene is the energetic paddling of the fisherman.

Lighting

I always prefer using natural light and tend to underexpose slightly.

Equipment

This was one of my earlier shots and was probably taken handheld with a Canon 750d and a basic 70-200 zoom lens.

Inspiration

Lake Nabugabo is a special place for me. As a young child nearly 50 years ago I went there for holidays. Some of the original buildings are still there and little has changed over time. Being out alone in the morning by the lake evokes for me a sense of time standing still

Editing

When I took this image I was fairly new to photography so I would only have done fairly basic editing tweaking the colour and contrast sliders and cropping the picture a bit.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I have moved on, I would usually have a Canon 5d Mk IV with a 24-70 mm F2.8 L lens and a 70-200 mm L F4. For street photography and candid shots I usually have a Fuji X100T with me as well.

Feedback

Most important is just to be there, to spend time watching until the picture you want emerges.
