If you photograph gigs and you don’t like to use flash, the lighting is chosen by someone else and you work with itEquipment
Canon 5D mkii Canon 50mm 1.8 lensInspiration
My friend Celia had been through a car accident, breast cancer and other major life events and her iconic band, King Loser had managed to stage a reunion tour after twenty five years and I had this feeling it was important to document that, so I asked Vice Australia if I could shoot this gig for Noisey which was their music division at the time. In the article I questioned whether it was King Loser’s “swan song” which would turn out to be presentient Celia had big future plans for a new album and more tours but would be dead less than twelve months later from an “adverse medical event” as stated on her death certificate, an accidental overdose, she was so alive here, in her element, the crowds adored her, she had that thing most people don’t have, absolutely mesmerising on stage, you could feel her heartEditing
I had to remove some colour because the lighting was strong pinks and bluesIn my camera bag
I don’t carry a bag. I make a decision beforehand about what lens will be most appropriate, it’s almost always the Canon 50mm 1.8, I don’t use a flash, I use zen magic and the forceFeedback
You have to feel it, and press the button on it. The only advice I ever give, when people say oh what camera or lens is best, I say gear has nothing to do with anything, being a good photographer is knowing when to press the button. If you don’t know when to press the button you will never get the shot
