Location
This photo was taken at ruby beach at the Olympic National Park (USA).Time
The image was take in August during the evening. It was a very special day since the weather was cloudy most afternoon but the later it got the sun went down towards small stripes of clear skies. The mist got thinner and so the whole scenery had this special magical touch with a sort of vague pastel colors. This evening light met a wonderful scenery and since it was pretty late hardly anyone was left on the usually very crowded beach. Patience paid off!Lighting
The special weather mix of clouds, mist and little sunshine allowed this special sort of vague light and soft pastel colors. You had to use long shutter speed and long exposure to really capture all the subtil tones of the sky and the water and it took some trying. You always have to play with your camera in frame setting like this and never use the "automatic" function...Equipment
As usually I used my Nikon D7100 and my Tamron 18-270. I do not like to use Flash at all (never ever in nature) and mostly - also thus time - I had no tripod with me since I don't like to carry too much on my hikes.Inspiration
I was inspired by the light, of course, by the unique scenery of this famous beach and the lovely contrast of the somehow frightening rocks and the soft magical sky. The final touch was added through the last visitor walking on the beach and putting it all together into one seductive scene.Editing
As usually I did some editing with photoshop, ligthened up the black parts and sharpened the edges. In my camera bag
Going on a bigger journey I normally have a wide angele lens and a macro lens to face all situationes. Very rarely when I stroll through a city at night I bring my tripod.Feedback
This was one of several occasions when patience during the evenig hours paid off. Especially at the sea it happens quite often that a cloudy day offers some final sunbeams just before sunset when the sun meets the horizon. If you are lucky this is about the most fascinating light you can get as a photographer. Always watch out where the clouds are and if there is any chance the sun might come back - And of course use really long exposure to capture the details on a black sand beach....
