The view over Capelle aan den IJssel and Rotterdam from the Algra bridge
The storm surge barrier Hollandse IJssel or Algera barrier is a dam in the IJssel which serves to prevent too much water from inland to extreme floods. It is the oldest work of the Delta Works. The barrier in the IJssel close five to six times a year.
In January 1954, less than a year after the Flood began with the first dredging. On 6 May 1958, the first slide for the first time as a pilot lowered. Later that year, on October 22, the storm surge barrier Hollandse IJssel was inaugurated.
