Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from above one of my favourite bays near my home on Gower in South Wales in the UK. The bays called Three Cliffs owing to the tri-corned cliffs, almost as if it is a prehistoric monster entering the sea.

Time

It was taken at around 7:00 am on a winters morning, even though I call it “Sunset at Three Cliffs Bay”. You can just see the light of the sun rising in the east. The sea (Bristol Channel) was calm which adds to the serenity of the scene.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the light of the sun on the horizon, along with a dramatic sky with menacing clouds. I also wanted to capture those warmer winter colours that you can get from the gorse an heather bushes on the cliff tops.

Equipment

It was shot with a Canon OES 7D Mk II, with a basic EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 kit lens. I mounted them both on a tripod with the lens set on MF, and the camera set on Aperture Priority. I always shoot in RAW, as it helps in post processing.

Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my favourite places, and better still, it’s in walking distance from my home. I have taken many images of this bay from various angles and positions, but I wanted a warm and inviting image. My only regret of this image is that it doesn’t show the sea coming in around the nearest cliff giving the viewer a path around the 3 cliffs.

Editing

I made some changes in Photoshop of the RAW image, increasing highlights, adjusting dehaze and uplifting the Red Channel. There was also some cropping required.

In my camera bag

Photographing landscapes I always want a tripod. Sometimes I may use a filter so I have a few of these in my bag. Other items that I will carry with me in my bag is an alternative lens, usually a Canon 24-105, shutter release, torch/flashlight, as well as lens cleaning brush/cloth and puffer.

Feedback

If you want to take a similar type of shot always use a tripod to ensure a sharper image. Use either the morning or evening sun depending on the specific area you are photographing. Try to visit the area before shooting to check on the light. On the day of the shoot if the light isn’t what you want, Waite for the light, not all images are there when you set up your camera, try to get there a bit earlier. If the sun is too strong, try to use a filter to lower the light of the sun but maintaining the detail of you fore and mid ground.
