Location
The photo was taken at Duffys Forest on Sydney's Northern Beaches. It's the darkest suburb that I could find close to my home. The photo faces towards the west which is why you see most of the light pollution on the left side of the photo.Time
I reckon I started the exposures around 7pm and finished about an hour later. Any earlier and I'd have gotten different colours from the western sky. Any later and the light pollution would not be as dramatic.Lighting
Star trails are a weird one for lighting. Most people think that you need to head for the outback to take good ones but this photo was taken in the suburbs of Sydney. The light pollution in my opinion actually adds to the scene! Makes it look like a fiery blaze.Equipment

I've always loved space and photography and wanted to combine the two. I had been getting into star trail photography for a while and had a sudden urge to do another one!Editing
For star trails it's almost a necessity! I took this one before I actually started shooting in RAW and editing in Lightroom so it's not as good as it could have been. At the end of the night you're left with a few hundred shots of the sky. I stack them using StarStaX which is a free program, then I just did some basic edits using Windows Photo Gallery! Now I'm a bit more into it haha!In my camera bag
It's not actually my camera, my parents use it for their work so we just keep the basics in the bag: camera, wide angle lens, telephoto lens, battery charger, and timer (with spare batteries). Did just order a battery grip and an extra camera battery though so they'll be thrown in there permanently.Feedback
The only thing you actually need to make a star trail (other than a camera) is a timer. You don't need a pitch-black sky, you don't need years of experience, you can learn everything you need to know how to do it for free on the web. You do need patience though haha! And a warm jacket.
