Location
This was taken from Fortunato Park on the east side of the US-40 bridge (Granada Ave.) in Ormond Beach , just north of Daytona Beach, Florida, USA (Lat: 29.176.171965, Long: 81.2.55.3975). I was there shooting some sunset images using the Intracoastal Waterway as a foreground and, as I turned around to leave, this image almost took my breath away. I had forgotten that the moon was almost full that night, but this was a forceful reminder, and since it was not quite full-dark yet I was able to get just the right exposure without flare.Time
This was an early evening shot, 6:17 pm on Sunday, 21 Feb 16. It was a warm winter day on Florida's east coast and winds were calm.Lighting
I just relied on nature for the lighting: f-stop=6.5, Shutter=1/250, Zoom 1440mm (35 mm equivalent)Equipment
I am something of a minimalist when it comes to equipment. Sure, I'd like to have some high-end gear, but I really love the challenge of seeing what I can get out of an average, or even low-end camera. I had just recently moved up to this Nikon Coolpix P-610 about 3 months earlier (my previous cam was a cheap Kodak) and I wanted to see what I could get. I was using the tripod for the sunset photos and the camera was still mounted on it as I turned around, so I had that steadiness for the long zoom.Inspiration
I love photography. It's helps me stay centered. I still work full-time in higher education so I love to shoot on evenings and weekends. My favorite images are those of nature and landscapes, and this view that presented itself to me as I turned around to leave was just so completely stunning that I had to snap it.Editing
The only modification this picture has had is a slight contrast adjustment. I didn't even crop it...other than that contrast adjustment this is the way it came out of the camera. In my camera bag
My bag is very light. I carry my Nikon Coolpix P-610, two spare batteries, a spare memory card, and a charger. This camera has a 60x zoom so I don't have to carry a bunch of lenses with me.Feedback
Pay attention to your surroundings. Wherever you are; whatever you are doing, there is a perfect image nearby. I constantly ask myself "what is my best shot here?", and then I look around and ask the same question about other locations near me. I don't often "set up" a shot, although sometimes I think I should do more of this. Usually I am searching for something that I can work with, and once in a great while, like this shot, it's just there for me.
